Yesterday's Reflection

Tuesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

The widow gave from her last. That is the act of faith that triggers the miracle - not a surplus offering but the cake made before the final portion for herself and her son. Do not be afraid. Give first. The jar will not go empty.

In your twenties the jar feels very finite. The resources - money, time, energy, attention - are real and limited. The first-fruits logic of giving from the last before the surplus is the hardest logic to internalize precisely when you feel you have the least. But the widow's jar does not empty. The miracle is in the sustained daily sufficiency, not the dramatic refill.

You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world - declared before you have done anything to earn either title. The question is not whether you have the qualities but whether they are being used. Salt that accommodates until it loses its distinctive flavor is useless. Light under a bushel illuminates nothing.

The Challenge

You are the light of the world. Name one specific thing you are doing to keep the light covered - one area of your faith life that is being systematically hidden. What would it look like to let it be seen this week?

One Prayer

Lord, let me give from the last and watch the jar not run empty. Let the light be uncovered. Let the salt keep its taste. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
